April is Child Abuse Prevention month and was created because child abuse and neglect was widespread and too often visible.
In support of those who have been the victim of child abuse and/or neglect, past and present, the Buchanan County Department of Social Services is planning a "No Excuse for Child Abuse - Break the Silence in Buchanan County" Softball Tournament.
This April, our mission is to shine a light on child abuse and raise awareness of the issue in our community. We are confident that this event will allow individuals from the area and surrounding areas to gather together with the same goal in mind.
The event is on Saturday April 20, 2024 at 8:30 AM at Poplar Gap Athletic Fields, Poplar Gap Park, Grundy, VA.
Team fee is $100 per team with all proceeds going towards Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention.

Once your registration is received you will be contacted with your confirmation for the tournament and the request to submit your roster for the tournament.
Rosters must be received by April 15, 2024 so number of teams can be set and brackets drawn. Once done, copies of the bracket and times will be sent to each team.
Tournament will have a cap at 6 teams, so first 6 teams to sign up.
The registration fee can be dropped off at Buchanan County Department of Social Services prior to the event or paid on the morning of the event.

Event Information
Tournament will be (if full 6 teams) double elimination with loser’s bracket. There are two fields for play and every team will get plenty of play time, but there will be a lot of games to get in so everyone will need to be ready as soon as a field opens up another game will need to start.

Please arrive at 8:30 am. Opening prayer, remarks and reading of rules and expectations will be at 8:45 am between the fields, with games to start at 9:00 am.
Teams must be ready at game time and be at field(s) prior to games start.
All players are required to sign a waiver to play, park rules.
No alcohol of any kind allowed on premises; this is also a park rule. No cursing or profane behavior, children will be present.
Team Information and Rules

Tournament will have a cap at 6 teams. First 6 teams to sign up!
Teams cannot pickup other players from other teams even if the other players team has been eliminated.
At least one female player per team.
A female player may only substitute for a female player and a male player for a male player.
Tournament Game Rules
Games will consist of 5 innings, with the Championship game being 6 innings.
The home team will be determined by coin flip.
Only one home run band per team, $10 for band. Band must be purchased before tournament starts and name of the band holder must be provided.
Band can be given to any player on team and must stay on that player. If band holder is intentionally walked, they will go straight to 2nd base.
Game balls will be provided and will be 12’ Incrediball used for males and 11’ hard balls for females. All other equipment (bats, gloves etc.) not provided.
Pitcher must pitch the correct ball to the batter 12’ for men and 11’ for women. If the wrong ball is pitched and the batter hits the ball the batter will automatically be given first base even if the hit resulted in an out or resulting in a base or multiple bases the batter will only get one base. However, if the wrong ball is pitched and the batter does not hit the ball the correction will just be made to the right ball and that pitch will go toward the count as a ball.
To be eligible to bat a player must have played the field the prior time in the field.
Batter starts out with count of 1 ball 1 strike.
No throws to first from outfield and infield fly rule applies.
3 home runs per inning.
Mercy Rule - If after the 3rd inning a team is up 15 or more runs.
The Umpires are not perfect and will be volunteering their time. Calls will be made to the best of their ability and the calls made will stand. We want every game to have a competitive spirit about it but in a respectable way.
